Workspace and Enthusiasm January 10, 2007

More procrastination. Oh dear. I have the day off from Retail Hell to write. So many other things to do before I actually Get Down To It though. I can blame Kate Harrison and her request to see other people’s desks for this one. Shame on you Kate. I’ve got a novel to write, doncha know??

So this is it. My desk. A cup of tea rather than a glass of wine. Well, it’s early. Mirror for obsessive plucking of eyebrows when I can’t think of anything else to put off Actually Writing. Lovely bf has a special study of his own. It has a long corridor and lots of doors. It is quiet. Mine is next to the kitchen. I can hear the washing machine gurgle. Close to the kettle though. And the wine.

Oh, and did I mention that I have a view? It’s lovely to see the fragile blossom against the stark sky today. I’m ready for Spring.

Ok. Enough. Time to write some words. Lovely bf won’t buy me any more treats from Amazon until I reach 7,000 words. Meanie.

What a well organised desk. Makes me feel quite ashamed as I look at the piles of books, papers and crumby plates on mine! Lovely view too.

Oooh. Now. I like your progress bar thingy - did you get it from somewhere, or are you Just Very Clever? I could do with one of those for a) the evil PhD and b) the novel which I started two years ago and haven’t had chance to finish because of a).

Lovely view, btw.

Your view is fab! I think I’d spend all day staring out the window if I tried working there (as well as the eyebrow-plucking). My desk faces…a brick wall. Painted purple (not by me). There is a small plastic footballer (the former Sheffield Wednesday goalie I am reliably informed), a metal shark, an old Christmas tree decoration and a broken toy soldier stuck on it.

I think it’s definitely time to move house…

Oh Julia. If only you knew. I\’m too scummy even for crumby plates! Luckily, I have a hairy hoover (dog, not beardy bf) to snoofle up crumbs. Hurrah!

KW - You can\’t finish your novel cos you\’re busy doing your PhD? You are clearly the Very Cleverest. I rest my case. Erm… lovely bf attends to matters of technical wizardry. Sadly, I am a spaz. You could try http://www.zokutou.co.uk/wordmeter which is what some of the other illustrious novel racers are using. Or email lovely bf. He\’ll sort it out. He likes to feel needed. Rubbish at snoofling crumbs though.

Lucy: Arrrghh! A plastic footie player sounds cool. I have a plastic Frenchman with a big fat belly. Would you like to swap? Those funny old bits of decoration and soldiers would probably be the first thing you unpacked if you moved. I have a red hippo on my desk that was Number 1 son\’s first cuddly when he was born. I have a photo of it with him in his plastic tub at the hospital when he was a few hours old. He has just turned 13 and had his first shave at Christmas. Yeah. I am a very sad person.

Great desk. I am starting to get desk envy. Great view. Depending weather I’m at old desk (pushed in corner with desk and no room I look out over roof tops and into people windows - it can become distracting) or now with new lap top on dinning table looking out at street level - not as interesting.

My number 1 son (14) shaved at Christmasfirst time to………sad and strange.

Gorgeous calming room and FAB view. That view would have me writing wonderful Wuthering Heights style gothic dramas, I think.
Do you think the view does influence what you write? No wonder I end up doing urban/suburban tales when I can currently see four conservatories/lean-tos without craning my neck…

Ooh, Liz, being able to peer into people\’s houses must be SOOOO tempting. Not sure I\’d be able to control myself! Shaving… our babies… (erm, not actually shaving our babies, obviously!!!) where does the time go eh?

Kate, yes!  I think your surroundings do affect what you write, or feel like writing… I must confess that I don\’t write well in the study at all… The Novel seems to prefer being written on the sofa with a glass of wine, a few candles burning and a re-run or two of Friends on in the background!!

I\’m a disgrace :(

I don’t know what snoofling is, but I like the sound of it, crumb-related or otherwise. :)

And no, not Very Clever, just have a tendency to prevaricate (no!), and ‘I’m working on my novel’ sounds so much better than ‘I’m watching re-runs of Charmed’…
