Of Heartbreak Hell September 1, 2007

Posted by Jen in : Journal , trackback

While tarting around various publishers’ websites, as I’m apt to do in the name of research, I happened upon a competition to list one’s top 5 break-up songs. Well, I thought, that’s got to be worth a half hour of procrastination.

And. I won a book. Ex and the City by Alexandra Heminsley. Signed, too. Cool bananas. So, you can read all about my top 5 break-up songs and why I love them here. Part of me is thinking hey, words what I writ are on the PanMacmillan website. But it also means the PanMacmillan people might think I’m a tragic loser which will stand me in great stead when I beg them to publish my novel. Sigh.

Could I win the lottery next, instead, please? I think lovely bf might be a bit more pleased about that somehow…

Hey! Well done you.

I was almost in tears just reading the titles of all the songs I’ve played over and over while getting over some toe rag of a boyfriend. The worst time to hear them is when you’re driving isn’t it? More dangerous than mobiles and screaming kids. No, actually -nothing is more dangerous than screaming kids.

Great choice of songs there Jen. Reading your list and the other lists made me feel quite sad (I’m sure you can remember what I went through a couple of months ago) There are a few songs I listened to over and over again and they were guaranteed to make me bawl like a big baby! Song lyrics can be very emotional; I think people underestimate lyrics sometimes.

Well done for getting on the website and for winning the book! Great stuff!

Fiona, you’re right, driving is the worst time to hear them. There’s nothing worse than one of your previously ’special songs’ coming on the radio when you’re hurtling along with tears bursting out of your eyes. Men, eh?!

A Writer - music definitely does something when combined with words which I guess is why films are all the more sob-inducing when they have a great soundtrack. I must admit, I did feel pretty depressed by the time I’d finished listening to that lot!!

4. Lane - September 2, 2007

Well done Jen - that’s brilliant!
Music is so powerful isn’t it. It can only take a couple of bars for it all to come flooding back. There’s a favourite bit of music of mine that can transport me back twenty years as if it was yesterday.
Enjoy the book:))

Thanks Lane! Yes, music does have magical powers… the opening bars of ‘Too Shy’ by KajaGooGoo (oh, the shame!) can take me back to my school days in seconds. Ah, can’t beat a bit of musical misery!

6. Helen - September 2, 2007

Cool bananas. Published on a website.

I do love music but I don’t really listen to anything at ’sad’ times. I think I use films to give me a good cry when I need it. I prefer music to give me energy when I’m flat as a pancake. Could do with a lift now infact. :(

Excellent answers Jen: funny as always.

I love any kind of sad, depressing melody, the more miserable, the more I like it. But that Kajagoogoo comment really got me, *sings* “too shy-eye, hush hush eye do eye…” or something.
JJx ;-D

Poor Helen. You can’t be flat. Be happy! Please? I don’t tend to listen to music either when I’ve got the woes but quite like it if it gets me accidentally!

JJ- I love anything in a minor key, especially piano music. Oh, I do so love Nick Beggs with his silly, swingy plaits. Those were the days, eh?

So impressed that you won a signed copy. I have a signed copy fetish. I have far too many fetishes(?) (plural of fetish?)
Anyway fabulous songs honey.

I’ve just reread my post. God I sound down. So sorry. Didn’t mean to be. Am fine now. Went to Body Step had a curry and a bath. Tra la la.

11. Jen - September 2, 2007

Helen - So long as it wasn’t all those miserable songs that squished you! Curry cures everything, it’s a well known fact (to those who know it).

Caroline - Hmmm, that is a funny plural. Maybe it’s best to have one fetish at a time, just to be sure of grammatical correctness?!?!

12. sheepish - September 3, 2007

Congrats on your prize and hope the lottery’s next. Hope fame doesn’t go to your head!!!

13. Rebecca James - September 4, 2007

No Jen, I’m going to win the lottery. And, statistically it would be too unlikely that we’d both win it - knowing each other virtually and all. Sorry to break the bad news. You really will just have to keep writing.

14. Jen - September 4, 2007

Sheepish - I’m trying to remain level-headed. I did buy some new slippers today though. I must try harder.

Rebecca - bugger, I should have guessed you’ve have first dibs on the lottery. Sigh. Writing it is then. I knew I was sitting at the ‘puter for a reason…

15. Mya - September 4, 2007

Congratulations - enjoy the book. Hope the writing is going well, I see your wordcount is creeping up. Over 50% now! Yay! Kajagoogoo? Were they real, or just an extremely vivid, bad dream? I had a Limahl haircut once, by accident. I cried a lot. Everyone else laughed a lot.
Ho hum.

Mya x

I’m visiting from Mya’s site and poking around. Breakup songs - nothing quite like them is there? The lists were interesting because I had almost (or completely) forgotten about some of them. But I’m happy to cry along with Rod Stewart any old time…

17. Jen - September 5, 2007

Mya. Seriously. I truly loved KajaGooGoo. Did you REALLY have a Limahl hairdo? Wowee, you are my new hero. I wouldn’t have laughed. Well, not much ;)

RC - Hello! I love miserable music. A job putting miserable music to miserable films/news would make me very happy (or miserable) indeed.

18. Karen - September 5, 2007

Well if you can’t get them any othe way go for the sympathy vote I say

19. Jen - September 6, 2007

Karen, I’m not sure being considered a miserable old spinster will be a great help in my new life as a chick lit queen! Misery Lit could be my new genre :(
