Of Musical Musings April 3, 2008
Posted by Jen in : Journal, Novel , trackbackIn the absence of anything sensible to say, I thought I’d do the decent thing and steal a meme from A Writer.
If Your Life Were a Movie…What Would the Soundtrack Be??
So, here’s how it works:
1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc)
2. Put it on shuffle
3. Press play
4. For every question, type the song that’s playing
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button
6. Don’t lie and try to pretend you’re cool…because you’re not!
7. Stick the soundtrack on your mp3 player and listen away during the day.
Now, I should tell you that I never, never play music on ’shuffle’. I have to listen to the right thing at the right time. Control freak? Um, yes actually.
But.
Doing this soundtrack thingummy has made me listen to music that I love and I actually haven’t heard for ages. And listening to Morcheeba before brek instead of in the kitchen, cooking, makes it seem completely different. And, somehow, that has combined with the thoughts I’ve been having about ’skewing the perception’ after one of Lucy’s posts on Box Elder. Art, music and perception are the main themes in The Novel so it’s all ticking away in my noggin in a most whizzifying way. I digress. Here, have a soundtrack:
Opening Credits: Candyfloss Branches – Kat Flint (I do love Kat Flint)
Waking Up: No Bravery – James Blunt (so much for being cool, eh? At least you know I’m not cheating)
First Day at School: Situations – Jack Johnson (Ugh, have gone right off poor Jack)
Falling in Love: War in the Mind – Lauren Hill
Fight Song: Silver Dagger – Martha Tilston
Breaking Up: One More Cup of Coffee - Bic Runga & The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra
Prom/Dance/Ball: Down to the Sea – Tim Booth
Life’s OK: Mood for a Day (Live) – Yes (hmmm, some old fogey music slipped in there)
Mental Breakdown: Damascus - The Natacha Atlas & Marc Eagleton Project
Flashback: I Wanna Be Your Lover – Prince
Getting Back Together: Otherwise – Morcheeba
Birth of Child: I Don’t Know Enough About You – Peggy Lee (hmmm, cool pick)
Wedding: Re-Offender – Travis (ha!)
Final Battle: Chameleon Day – Talk Talk
Funeral Song: Late Light – Rosie Brown
End Credits: Allegri’s Miserere – The Tallis Scolars (might have this at my funeral for extra weeping value)
Oh, good, I’m late for work now. That really sums me up…

You like Yes! Woohoo!
“Mood for a Day” by Steve Howe is brilliant. Is that the one from Yessongs?
I’ve got tons of their stuff (and most other prog bands too).
Right, I’m off to listen to “Heart of the Sunrise”…
OMG how embarrassing to do that little exercise. In my defence, Bobo has rather inhabited and populated my itunes. Honest gov. I have put my list up on my blog.
thanks for the idea hon, it was brilliant fun to do.

Yaaaay for itunes. I never knew I had such appalling taste in music, until Bobo started populating my itunes list with even worse music lol.
Arse, I can’t even work out this comments thingie today. That’s serious PMT for you.
Mutter, mutter. I don’t even understand this, that’s how old-fangled I am. What a dunce.
I can’t be doing with ’shuffle’ either. I don’t like surprises.
That’s quite a mix you have there miss - many of which I don’t know and now feel very old fogeyish indeed:-)
Very interesting music collection you have here. I love my ipod. Mainly listening to podcasts though!
Hey hey hey, where’s the Ani Di Franco???? I guess you just can’t control the power of the shuffle - otherwise mine wouldn’t play Scouting for Girls 4 times in a row, grrrr teenage surfer indie-pop - what the f*** is that doing there!?
Cap’n Black - It is indeed from Yessongs. It’s surprisingly good and reminds me to be happy.
Hullaballooooo - It’s quite scary, the stuff that sneaks into our music library. I have all manner of tragic 80s stuff from my ‘yoof’ which is not only sad but also means I’ve bought it on iTunes AND for my record player all those years ago. Grace Jones? The Cure? KajaGooGoo? (They’re still all good though. Especially Prince.)
Karen - Not a dunce, just too busy doing sensible stuff to be reliving your past in a digitally-enhanced sort of way. Something like that, anyway.
Lane - Phew, I’m glad I’m not the only shuffle-phobic person here. You’re not fogeyish. I’m just a weird hippy who likes dodgy old folk. Well, folk music. Not just ‘dodgy old folk’. You know what I mean.
Sarah - I have an old iPod, it looks like a lime-green brick. Tres cool, no?
Kerry - Scouting for Girls? Blimey. Mine chucked up some Green Day, oddly enough. I blame the kids. Ah, Ani di Franco, fab. We’re hooked on Laura Marling now, thanks to you. And Charlene Soraia is a new discovery. She’s cool. Oh, now I want to learn to play my guitar again. Sigh.
Oooohhhh I love this idea!! It’s been way to hot recently for thinking so I might just steal this from you before my friends and family starts sending me stroppy e-mails demanding to know if I’m dead and, if not, why am I not updating the blog!!
You have a very eclectic mixture of music there hon - I’m feel a google search coming on…..

My sound track would just be a selection of U2 songs - so many to choose from ….
I’m so uncool I don’t even have an i-pod, music library etc or anything resembling them. However, I am cool enough to have a link here, for which I am extremely grateful!
Carol - steal away old girl! Can’t wait to see what you come up with…
Helen - Oddly, I never managed to get into U2 even though I thought it might make me cooler, way back when…
Lucy - But, you see, the lack of music in your ears is why you manage to write so well - especially your 30-word snippets. And I don’t link to just anyone you know. I love your blog muchly.
I can’t do shuffle either, especially as I have Michel Thomas’ Learn Italian and Spanish on my ipod…it’s always weird when his disembodied voice starts telling me off out of nowhere. Your music is really electic - love it!
Great fun……must steal
Yvonne - I’ve Michel Thomas’ French course on mine! He’s a smug bugger, isn’t he? My kids go into hysterics when I switch the car on. “Bleurgh, bleurgh bleugh bleuuuurgh,’ they shriek as my face goes red. Bloomin sods.
Liz - I’m beginning to think memes are even better when they’re stolen!
I don’t have an I-Pod, but I don’t think I could cope with shuffle, if I did. I like to know what’s coming next. Usually. But I like surprises too. Erm…but I’m not sure I’d enjoy James Blunt jumping out from behind an aural hedge, if you get my meaning. I’d find that distressing.
Mya x
Mya - Don’t tell anyone, but I secretly quite like James Blunt. So… any surprise, so long as it’s not too surprising or poor old Jimbo, eh? x
I am a bit disappointed to see that this all looks pretty respectable! I am totally doing this although there is a chance that my Kids from Fame soundtrack will out me as a wannabe student of the School of Performing Arts.
You’ve jumped right up in my ‘cool’ stakes, again.
I mean….Tim Booth….Bic Runga….
Wicked!
By the way, I’ve been trying to add this comment for a few days now, but kept getting some error screen about too much usage….or something. So that’s persistence for ya!
Success, at last!
I can sleep easier now.
Jen - I have done mine now! http://allfivehorizons.wordpress.com/2008/04/10/soundtrack-meme/
Bedshaped - Thanks for persisting. Not sure what’s with the error message thingy. As for the music, I often find the best stuff is found by accident… and I hate to say it but Napster is far better than iTunes for that sort of domino-effect of recommendation.
Kate - cool bananas. Am coming over to investigate now.
